Safety and Comfortability:

Here at Diggity Doggy, safety comes first. Here are some examples of the steps we take to help ensure the safety of your best friend(s):

1. We are very selective in what dogs we allow in our pack and we have an attendance policy of 2-5 times per week for our attendees; both provide a tremendous difference in safety and comfortability for our pack. Because of this, the dogs here are more like family and Diggity Doggy is more like a second home than any other daycare we know of! Safety will always come before a high dog count for profit here. All the dogs at Diggity Doggy are non-aggressive and are *non-anxious (please see below for our definition of anxious).

2. Our goal is to create a quiet, stress free play and sleeping environment, free of barking and whining. Not all dogs can handle being around constant noise and anxiety; most daycares don’t focus on this, so we’ve created a unique niche and place for those that need a quieter, less anxious, and overly aroused environment. Also, barking and whining are almost always related to some kind of anxiety, impatience, and/or irritation and tend to lead to fights, bites, and misunderstandings as a result. Of course, an occasional bark/whine will still happen from time to time, but a mostly bark/whine free environment helps us hear when there is a problem between two dogs, reduces overexcitement, and helps create a much more comfortable environment for all that are there. On average, we have 1-5 single barks/whines happen per week, if even that, and during our nap time, you can hear a pin drop because it’s so quiet and calm. This is yet another thing we do that improves safety and comfortability greatly and as a result, we haven’t had a dog fight in over 5 years! How many daycares can claim that?

3. Bullying is not tolerated (mounting, dominating play/behaviors, forceful play, ignoring social cues, etc.).

4. Our staff is trained to watch out for the behaviors that occur before an altercation between the dogs. We redirect the dogs as soon as we see these signs in order to avoid there being any serious issues or injury.

5. We have limited selected and planned times for people coming in and out of the daycare and we offer full-day daycare only. All new appointments are scheduled well in advance and we don’t take walk-ins and/or give tours. We also lock the doors after drop off (10 am) and let the dogs “just be dogs”, without interruption, for 6 hours until pick up time between 4 pm. This is all for good reason. A pack of dogs gets very worked up and protective whenever someone enters and/or leaves their enclosed space as they’re prone to feeling as though they need to protect their space, themselves, and/or their pack. This is when the probability of an altercation and similar issues is highest. They can get overly excited and confused, and as a result, can nip at each other and/or push each other to see who is coming in, which in turn can create a quarrel and/or injury. They also get very upset when they see their doggy friends leave and wonder why they aren’t leaving, too, which is why we don’t offer half days. Many daycares boast about how great it is to have dogs picked up and dropped off at any time during the day and how they give tours while walking people through the daycare, but those things are unfortunately not what is best for the dogs when it comes to safety and comfortability. A reduced amount of time where there is in and out traffic makes for a safer and more relaxing experience for your beloved fur-friend and our pack of Diggity Doggies.

6. We have a nap time and all of the dogs are comfortable in a kennel/crate setting. This comfortability helps ensure our Diggity Doggies get a good nap in. A daily nap time makes a huge difference in how the dogs behave and helps condition the pack to get tired around the same time each day. Just like with kids, dogs need the break to recharge. Otherwise, like kids, they get crabby. They also would lay around on the floor more often and at different times. This makes it more likely that the dogs get stepped on by those that are playing, which in turn could very easily result in a confrontation and/or injury.

7. We are connected to the fire station with our fire alarms. Many dog boarding/daycare facilities aren’t connected to a fire station.

*By anxious we are referring to behaviors such as uncontrolled whining, uncontrolled barking, constantly trying to escape, constantly scattering about, overly nervous, etc. Some dogs at Diggity Doggy may have some anxiety, however. As long as it appears that the anxiety can be improved through socialization and does not affect the offers, we work with them with the goal to reduce the anxiety and increase confidence and overall happiness.

Teaching “True Social Skills”:

Our goal is to teach our Diggity Doggies as many social skills as possible. This includes being social with all sizes, breeds, play styles, and ages. This tends to result in a very well behaved dog when they are in the “real world”. Some examples of this are:

➨ Bigger dogs are more respectful of smaller dogs and don’t get overly excited when they see them

➨ Bigger dogs play safely with smaller dogs

➨ Smaller dogs don’t fear bigger dogs

➨ Smaller dogs know how to play with bigger dogs

➨ More excitable dogs know how to read and respect the social cues of older or less playful dogs

Holidays:

To give our staff a more flexible and enjoyable day on our observed holidays, we do not have daycare on the following holidays:

New Year’s Eve Day, New Year’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve Day, and Christmas Day.

*On holidays, we do provide daycare for the dogs that are boarding with us. See our boarding page for details.
